Dr. John Cherian Oommen is a public health specialist and physician who has spent over 30 years immersed in the Adivasi community of Bissamcuttack, Rayagada District, South Odisha, living, learning, and working with the predominantly Kondh tribal community. He has led the MITRA (Madsen’s Institute for Tribal and Rural Advancement) Community Health team, served as Medical Superintendent, and helped run the 200-bed Christian Hospital, Bissamcuttack. He is also a consultant to the Government of Odisha in the capacity of Community Health and Tribal Education, and a member of multiple scientific advisory committees of the Indian Council of Medical Research.
His work at MITRA evolved a community-based malaria control initiative that created immediate and striking reductions in malaria mortality, prompting the WHO to include the MITRA report in its Regional Health Forum. MITRA’s work also identified the hitherto unrecognised phenomenon of mal-mal (malaria-induced malnutrition), demonstrating that addressing malaria improved children’s growth and nutritional status.
