Dr. Jayaprakash Muliyil is one of India’s foremost epidemiologists and a former Principal of Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore. He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Medicine and Community Medicine at CMC Vellore, and subsequently joined the faculty of the Community Health and Development (CHAD) programme where he led the leprosy control programme. In 1985, he went to Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, where he completed his MPH and DrPH in Epidemiology. He became Professor of Community Medicine in 1990 and was instrumental in starting the first formal course in Epidemiology in India at CMC Vellore in 1992. From 2002, he served a five-year term as Principal of CMC Vellore. He is a Visiting Professor at Tufts University, Boston, and Copenhagen University, Denmark, and has served ICMR on multiple scientific advisory committees. He currently serves as Chairperson of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the National Institute of Epidemiology and as Medical Consultant to The Leprosy Mission International. With over 173 publications and more than 9,000 citations, his research spans infectious diseases, leprosy, child survival, vaccine-preventable illnesses, and diarrhoeal diseases. He has been a principal investigator on nationally and internationally funded grants and has consulted for WHO, SIDA, and DANIDA across multiple countries.
