Padmanaban utilizes functional metabolic studies to understand obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and gestational diabetes mellitus and their pathogenesis in the Indian population. His current work includes the study of weight loss intervention on beta-cell function recovery. He is trained in utilizing statistical genetics to understand the role of genetics in complex disorders and is currently working on elucidating the genetic architecture of body fat distribution. He is also experienced in performing secondary data analysis on survey data to draw public health-relevant interpretations.
